Holiday countdowns

Days until the next holidays

Countdowns to widely observed holidays, from Christmas and the Fourth of July to Diwali, Ramadan, and Lunar New Year. Each page explains how its date is set and what to plan for. Several are US holidays, and each page says where a holiday is observed.

Upcoming holidays in date order

The days-left column is calculated live from your device’s date.

How these countdowns work

Every countdown targets the start of the holiday’s date at midnight in your own time zone, read from your device. That means the count changes at your midnight, not at midnight in the country where a holiday originates. Someone in Tokyo reaches zero for New Year’s Day about fourteen hours before someone in New York. If you are counting toward an event in another place, convert its local time with the time zone converter or set a custom countdown.

Inclusive and exclusive counting

“Days until” here means the number of calendar dates you still have to pass through, excluding today: the day before a holiday shows one day left. Some people count today as well, which adds one. The live timer on each page shows the exact days, hours, and minutes, and the separate “sleeps” figure counts the nights remaining. For business deadlines, the working-day counter excludes weekends and, optionally, US federal holidays.

Fixed dates and movable feasts

Some holidays never move, such as Christmas on December 25. Others follow a weekday rule, like US Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, or a lunar or lunisolar calendar, like Easter, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Diwali, and Lunar New Year. For those, the pages explain the rule and list upcoming dates. Ramadan and Diwali can differ between communities by a day, so their pages say which published calendar they follow. Where a reliable published date is not yet available, no date is shown rather than a guess.
