New Year falls on a Friday. Sleeps counts the nights from today; weekdays in between excludes today and the day itself and does not subtract public holidays.

The counter reaches zero at midnight on January 1 in your time zone, the moment New Year’s Eve celebrations count down to.

What is New Year?

New Year’s Day, January 1, opens the Gregorian calendar year and is one of the few public holidays shared by almost every country, including many that also keep a separate traditional new year. Countdowns to it are really countdowns to midnight on New Year’s Eve. The day after brings practical changes too: new tax years in many countries, updated rates and contracts, and the familiar habit of writing the old year on forms.

Where it is observed: A public holiday in almost every country; a US federal holiday.

How the date of New Year is set

January 1 has been the start of the civil year in most of Europe since the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries; England and its colonies moved the legal start of the year from March 25 to January 1 in 1752. The date never moves, but in the US the federal holiday shifts to an adjacent weekday when January 1 falls on a weekend.

When January 1 falls on a weekend

January 1, 2028 is a Saturday. Under the federal rule, the observed holiday moves back to Friday, December 31, 2027, so federal offices close on the last day of the old year. The Federal Reserve is an exception to the Saturday rule: it does not move Saturday holidays to the Friday, which can affect when transfers settle around the turn of the year.

When January 1 is a Sunday, the observed holiday is Monday, January 2. Payroll and billing systems that rely on “next business day” logic should be tested against both cases.

Week numbers and year-end dates

Under ISO 8601, the first week of the year is the one containing the first Thursday. That means January 1 can belong to week 52 or 53 of the previous year, and December 29 to 31 can belong to week 1 of the next. If your organisation plans in week numbers, check the week number reference before booking early-January deadlines.

Contracts and subscriptions that run “for one year from” a date in late December can end in a different calendar year than people expect. The date calculator shows the exact end date for any interval.

Frequently asked questions about New Year

If New Year’s Day is on a Saturday, do US federal workers get Friday off?

Yes. The observed federal holiday is the preceding Friday, December 31. This happens for January 1, 2028, so the observed holiday is Friday, December 31, 2027.

Why was the new year once in March?

Many medieval European calendars began the year on March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation. England used that legal new year until 1752, which is why some historical dates between January and March are written with two years, such as 1731/32.

Do other calendars have their own new year?

Yes. The Chinese, Jewish, Islamic, Persian, and several South and Southeast Asian calendars each have a new year on a different Gregorian date. Lunar New Year and Rosh Hashanah are among the best known.
