12-hour and 24-hour time

In 24-hour notation, midnight is 00:00 and noon is 12:00. In 12-hour notation, midnight is 12:00 AM and noon is 12:00 PM. For hours after noon, subtract 12 to get the PM reading: 18:45 is 6:45 PM. The format buttons change the display and remember your preference in this browser.

What your UTC offset tells you

An offset such as UTC+02:00 means your clock is two hours ahead of UTC. It describes the current relationship, not necessarily the one your city uses all year. For a future meeting, use the time zone converter with the meeting date.

If this clock looks wrong

This page reads the same system clock as your device. Check that automatic date and time are enabled, then check your device’s selected time zone. A correct instant with the wrong time-zone setting can display the wrong hour. The page does not independently measure network time or correct a misconfigured system clock.

Using the fullscreen display

Choose Fullscreen to enlarge the clock for a presentation or shared display. Press Escape or choose Exit fullscreen to return. Browser tabs can be paused or throttled in the background; when an update runs, the clock reads the current device time again instead of assuming exactly one second passed.

Writing a time so nobody misreads it

“Call at 9” works inside one office. Across regions, give the time, the date, and a place or offset: “Tuesday 14 April, 09:00 New York (UTC−4)”. A city is better than an abbreviation, because labels such as CST and IST each stand for more than one zone. For a deadline, say whose midnight applies, and avoid 12:00 AM and 12:00 PM, which readers often swap; write 00:00 or 12:00, or “midnight at the end of Friday”.
