New Year’s Eve falls on a Thursday. Sleeps counts the nights from today; weekdays in between excludes today and the day itself and does not subtract public holidays.

The main counter reaches zero at the start of December 31. For the midnight moment itself, see the New Year’s Day countdown.

What is New Year’s Eve?

New Year’s Eve is December 31, the last day of the Gregorian year, and the evening most people associate with fireworks, parties, and a countdown to midnight. It is normally a working day, often with early closures, and the celebration itself happens in the final hours before the calendar changes. Few holidays make time zones so visible: midnight travels around the planet for more than a day.

Where it is observed: Observed worldwide. Usually a working day; not a US federal holiday.

How the date of New Year’s Eve is set

New Year’s Eve is always December 31, the 365th day of a common year or the 366th day of a leap year. The moment people celebrate, midnight, is local: each time zone reaches it at a different instant. This page counts to the start of December 31 in your own time zone.

Midnight moves around the world

The first inhabited places to reach the new year are Kiribati’s Line Islands, which keep UTC+14. New Zealand’s Chatham Islands follow 15 minutes later, then Samoa, Tonga, and New Zealand on summer time at UTC+13. American Samoa, at UTC−11, is among the last inhabited places to celebrate, so roughly 25 hours separate the first and last public midnights. If you want to share the moment with someone abroad, convert their midnight into your own time with the time zone converter.

Some zones are offset by half or three-quarter hours: Nepal, at UTC+5:45, reaches midnight 15 minutes before India, at UTC+5:30, and 45 minutes before Pakistan, at UTC+5. A clock showing “00:00” is only meaningful together with its time zone.

Planning the evening and the next morning

Restaurants, venues, and ride services charge peak prices on the night of the 31st, and public transport in large cities often runs special late timetables with crowd controls near viewing areas. Book early and check the last departures.

Because New Year’s Day is a public holiday in most countries, the next day is effectively a non-working day for banks and offices. If a bill or transfer is due around the turn of the year, settle it on or before December 30 to stay clear of closures.

Frequently asked questions about New Year’s Eve

Which country celebrates New Year first?

Kiribati’s Line Islands, including Kiritimati, keep UTC+14 and are the first inhabited places to reach midnight. The Chatham Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and New Zealand follow within about an hour.

Is New Year’s Eve a federal holiday in the US?

No. December 31 is a regular working day unless January 1 falls on a Saturday, in which case federal employees observe the New Year’s Day holiday on Friday, December 31. That happens next in 2027.

Do leap seconds affect the midnight countdown?

Not in practice. Leap seconds have been added at the end of June or December, but none has been inserted since 2016, and in 2022 the international body responsible for the SI voted to stop adding them by 2035. Device clocks do not show them.
