What is Chinese New Year?
Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is the first day of the Chinese lunisolar calendar and the most important holiday in China and much of East and Southeast Asia. Families gather for a reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve, give red envelopes of money, set off fireworks where permitted, and welcome a new zodiac animal. Celebrations traditionally continue until the Lantern Festival fifteen days later.
Where it is observed: Observed in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Chinese communities worldwide. Korea (Seollal) and Vietnam (Tết) celebrate their own lunar new year, usually on the same day.
How the date of Chinese New Year is set
The new year begins on the day of the second new moon after the winter solstice in most years, which places it between January 21 and February 20. The Chinese calendar is calculated for China Standard Time (UTC+8), so when a new moon falls close to midnight, a calendar computed for another time zone can give a different day.

The holiday week and the travel rush
In mainland China the Spring Festival is a statutory holiday, extended to a break of around a week by swapping working days with nearby weekends. The weeks around it see the largest annual migration in the world, known as chunyun, as people travel home. Rail tickets go on sale in advance and sell out quickly.
For businesses, factories may close for two weeks or more, and production and shipping slow both before and after the holiday. If you order goods from China, plan for a delay of several weeks around this date.
Which date this page uses
The dates in the table follow the official calendar for China, as published by observatories such as the Hong Kong Observatory. Software calendars do not always agree: some implementations place the new year a day later in 2027 and a day earlier in 2030, because the new moon in those years falls very close to midnight in China. Korea and Vietnam calculate for their own time zones, and Vietnam’s Tết has occasionally fallen on a different day from China’s.
Frequently asked questions about Chinese New Year
Which zodiac animal begins on the next Chinese New Year?
The year that began on February 17, 2026 is the Year of the Horse. From February 6, 2027 it is the Year of the Goat (or Sheep), followed by the Monkey from January 26, 2028.
Why does Chinese New Year fall on a different date each year?
The Chinese calendar follows the Moon for its months and the Sun for its seasons. Twelve lunar months are about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so the new year moves earlier, then jumps later when a leap month is added.
How long is the Chinese New Year holiday?
The official break in mainland China usually lasts around a week once adjusted working days are counted. Traditional celebrations continue until the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day.
