What is Father’s Day?
Father’s Day in the United States is the third Sunday in June, a day for honouring fathers and father figures. It was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington, in 1910 at the urging of Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father raised six children after her mother died. It took decades to gain official status, and it remains a Sunday observance rather than a day off work.
Where it is observed: The date shown is the US date (third Sunday in June), also used in Canada, the UK, Ireland, India, and many other countries. Australia, New Zealand, and much of southern Europe use other dates.
How the date of Father’s Day is set
The third Sunday in June can fall between June 15 and June 21. President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a permanent national observance in 1972. Many countries share this date, but Australia and New Zealand use the first Sunday in September, and Spain, Italy, and Portugal mark March 19, the feast of St Joseph.

Different countries, different Sundays
If your family is spread across countries, Father’s Day can arrive three or four times a year. The third Sunday in June is shared by the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, India, Japan, and others. Germany links its Vatertag to Ascension Day, a Thursday 39 days after Easter, so its date moves with Easter. Thailand celebrates on December 5, the late King Bhumibol’s birthday.
Practical timing
Father’s Day often lands close to the June solstice and the start of summer holidays, so outdoor plans are common and popular restaurants and golf courses book up. As with any Sunday observance, posted gifts should be timed to arrive by Saturday.
The weekday counter above counts the working days left, which is handy if you are ordering something that needs a few business days to ship.
