Mother’s Day in the United States is the second Sunday in May, a day for honouring mothers and maternal figures with cards, flowers, and family meals. It grew out of a campaign by Anna Jarvis, who held a memorial for her own mother in 1908 and later regretted how commercial the day became. It falls on a Sunday, so it is not a day off in itself, but it is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants and florists.

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day in 1914. The date therefore falls between May 8 and May 14. Other countries choose differently: the UK and Ireland celebrate Mothering Sunday three weeks before Easter, and Mexico keeps May 10 regardless of weekday.
