How the date of Easter is set
Easter is the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon that falls on or after March 21. Churches use fixed tables rather than astronomical observation, so the date can differ from the real full moon by a day or two. In the Gregorian calendar, Western Easter always falls between March 22 and April 25. Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar for the same rule and often celebrate later.

Ash Wednesday is 46 days before Easter, Palm Sunday is a week before, Good Friday is two days before, and Pentecost is 49 days after. In countries such as Germany, Ascension Day (39 days after Easter) and Whit Monday are public holidays too, which can make May and June surprisingly short working months.
School spring breaks in the UK and parts of Europe are often built around Easter, so travel prices follow its date. In years when Easter is early, the break can fall in March; in late years it pushes toward May.

In the United States, Easter Sunday is not a federal holiday, and Good Friday is a normal federal workday, though some states and many schools close. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are closed on Good Friday. In the UK, Canada, Australia, and much of Europe, Good Friday is a public holiday, and Easter Monday is one in many of those countries as well.

Why is Orthodox Easter on a different date?
Most Orthodox churches apply the same rule using the Julian calendar and its older lunar tables. That usually places Orthodox Easter one or more weeks after Western Easter, though in some years the two coincide.
