What is Halloween?

Halloween, October 31, is the evening before All Saints’ Day, and its name is a contraction of All Hallows’ Eve. Its customs draw on the Gaelic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season. In North America it is known for costumes, trick-or-treating, carved pumpkins, and haunted attractions. It is a normal working and school day, so most of the activity happens in the evening.

Where it is observed: Widely observed in the US, Canada, Ireland, the UK, and increasingly elsewhere. Not a public holiday.

How the date of Halloween is set

Halloween is fixed on October 31. Because it is not a public holiday, a weekday Halloween means trick-or-treating squeezed in after school and work, and many parties move to the nearest weekend. Some towns set official trick-or-treat hours or even move them to another evening; check your local announcements.

Daylight saving time and Halloween

Since 2007, US clocks have fallen back on the first Sunday in November, so Halloween is always still on daylight saving time in the United States. That keeps sunset about an hour later than it would be under standard time. In Europe, clocks change on the last Sunday in October, so Halloween usually falls after the change and evenings are darker earlier.

For trick-or-treat planning, it helps to know the local sunset time; in the northern US it can be before 6:00 p.m. by October 31.

Costumes, candy, and timing

Costume shops and online sellers see demand peak in the last two weeks of October, so popular sizes and shipping slots run out late in the month. Pumpkin patches open from late September; a carved pumpkin usually lasts about a week before it starts to soften, so carving too early is a common mistake.
