Planning across Australia
Australia combines whole-hour and half-hour offsets with different seasonal practices. Sydney and Melbourne are eastern reference clocks; Brisbane is also eastern but can differ from them seasonally. Adelaide and Darwin provide central references, while Perth provides a western reference.
Do not assume that every city using AEST during part of the year changes clocks together. Compare the actual cities on the event date. A Sydney–Brisbane meeting can keep the same gap for months and then shift when only one location changes its clock.
When scheduling with Europe or North America, check the date on both sides. Australia can already be on the following calendar day, and southern hemisphere clock changes occur in a different part of the year from northern hemisphere changes. A fixed UTC slot can therefore move on both participants’ local clocks over a year.
For future appointments, choose the date in the time zone converter. Today’s offset is a current reference, not a guarantee about a future clock rule.
Time zones and clock changes in Australia (2026)
The reference cities above cover 6 distinct clocks. Their standard and summer offsets for 2026 are:
| Reference city | IANA zone | Standard offset | Summer offset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney | Australia/Sydney | UTC+10 | UTC+11 |
| Melbourne | Australia/Melbourne | UTC+10 | UTC+11 |
| Brisbane | Australia/Brisbane | UTC+10 | — |
| Adelaide | Australia/Adelaide | UTC+9:30 | UTC+10:30 |
| Perth | Australia/Perth | UTC+8 | — |
| Darwin | Australia/Darwin | UTC+9:30 | — |
Clock changes in 2026 (for the zones that observe daylight saving):
- Sunday, April 5, 2026: clocks go back one hour.
- Sunday, October 4, 2026: clocks go forward one hour.
Brisbane and Perth and Darwin keep the same offset all year, so their gap to the rest of the country changes on those dates.
Working hours overlap: Sydney and other business hubs
The table shows when a 09:00–17:00 weekday in Sydney overlaps the same working hours elsewhere, in mid-January and mid-July 2026. Times are in Sydney local time, with the other city’s local time underneath.
| City | January overlap | July overlap |
|---|---|---|
| New York | None | None |
| London | None | None |
| Berlin | None | None |
| Dubai | 16:00–17:00 (1 h) Dubai: 09:00–10:00 | 15:00–17:00 (2 h) Dubai: 09:00–11:00 |
| Singapore | 12:00–17:00 (5 h) Singapore: 09:00–14:00 | 11:00–17:00 (6 h) Singapore: 09:00–15:00 |
| Tokyo | 11:00–17:00 (6 h) Tokyo: 09:00–15:00 | 10:00–17:00 (7 h) Tokyo: 09:00–16:00 |
There is no shared 09:00–17:00 window with New York, London and Berlin, so one side has to start early or stay late. Where January and July differ, at least one of the two places changes its clocks during the year. Use the meeting planner to test other hours or add more participants.
